Responding to its customers, Vicor announces the addition of the PI34xx series to its Picor Cool-Power ZVS Buck Regulator family. Fittingly, this buck regulator will be showcased at Embedded World in Nuremberg, Germany (Tues 26 – Thurs 28 February). It is optimized for 12 V operation (8 V to 18 Vin) and delivers over 95% peak efficiency for 12 – 3.3 V regulation, and up to 15 A.

Since its introduction in July 2012 the Cool-Power Zero-Voltage Switching (ZVS) Buck Regulator has reduced switching losses associated with conventional, hard-switching buck regulators. The original products provided a wide range (8 – 36V), perfect for designers who need a wide input range and for designers of systems that use 24V power distribution. Higher distribution voltage results in a more efficient the power system, but there are many applications that are constrained by a 12V architecture and cannot take advantage of higher line conversion. Vicor therefore optimized its 8V – 36V wide range regulators for a 12V family, reducing the Vin range to 8V to 18V and further enhancing efficiency for 12V usage.

The resulting P134xx series regulators provide 95% efficiency in a package small enough to meet the needs of embedded applications in computing, telecommunications and industrial environments.

• The Cool-Power ZVS Buck Regulator integrates ZVS topology in a small, high-density Sip (System in Package) that measures just 10 mm x 14 mm x 2.6 mm.
  
• It enhances PoL (point-of-load) DC-DC regulation by reducing switching losses in the super-efficient 12 V architecture.
  
• The regulator is simple to use and space-efficient. It integrates control circuitry, power semiconductors and support components; only an external inductor and minimal capacitors are required
